Awards place responsibility on winners: Sajia Rahman

Young artist Sajia Rahman Sondha said that an award not only recognises recipients for their hard work but also places a greater responsibility on winners.

Sajia Rahman Sondha won Best Young Artist 2022 Award at the 23rd Young Artist Art Exhibition, which ended at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Saturday.

‘I am still processing the fact that I won the Best Artist Award at the 23rd Young Artist Art Exhibition, which is a huge platform. However, an award not only recognises recipients for their hard work but also places a greater responsibility on winners. I have taken a small break after winning the prize to sketch out my plans as an artist,’ she told New Age.

Sajia Rahman went to Bangladesh Shishu Academy to receive art lessons during her childhood. As her interest in art grew, she decided to pursue an education in fine arts.

‘I completed my graduation in painting from the University of Development Alternative. I am doing my post-graduation now,’ she mentioned.

Sajia is comfortable with acrylic on canvas. She won the Best Young Artist 2022 Award for her acrylic artwork titled Beyond Entity.

‘My thoughts about my award-winning work titled Beyond Entity have changed over time. Also, viewers have the freedom to interpret the artwork in their own way,’ she said.

‘Human beings are confined by different norms and rules set by their respective societies. I feel that sometimes my existence wants to revolt against these norms and announce their presence. To announce that, my existence wants to come out of the frame and this is the theme of Beyond Entity,’ Sajia mentioned.

Some of her other projects are titled Unmukta Chithi, Rain Poetry and Attakathan.

Sajia started working on the series Unmukta Chithi in 2017. To date, she has created between 18 and 19 paintings for this series.

‘The series titled Unmukta Chithi is related to my daily life and my surroundings. We come across hundreds of words every day while having conversations, reading the newspaper or watching the television. But, only a few words catch our attention. Likewise, I pick words from my surroundings and try to create a new narrative with my paintings,’ shared Sajia.

Another series Sajia is working on currently is titled Brishti Kabya. This series captures the exquisite beauty of the monsoon season in Bangladesh.

‘It is difficult to enjoy the monsoon season to the fullest in urban areas. Rains usually make rural landscape greener and young children really love the season. This series shows an urban soul’s longing for rain in a rural area and the way rain transforms the environment,’ she said.

Sajia has no immediate concrete plans for the future.

‘I am still at the initial stage of my art career. I will be working more on my ongoing series titled Unmukta Chithi, Rain Poetry and Attakathan. As time progresses, I will chalk out plans for the upcoming days,’ she concluded.
